Every ad network swears it drove your installs, and if you trust each one's own dashboard you'll count the same install three times. An MMP is the neutral referee that settles the argument. Here's what it does and when you actually need one.

What an MMP is

MMP stands for mobile measurement partner: a third-party platform like AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, or Singular that attributes app installs and in-app events to the campaigns that drove them.

Its power comes from being independent. Because it isn't Meta or Google grading its own homework, it can dedupe across every channel and give you one version of the truth instead of five inflated ones.

What it actually does

Underneath the dashboard, an MMP does a handful of unglamorous but essential jobs:

  • Deduplicates installs so two networks can't both claim the same user.
  • Integrates with hundreds of ad networks through one SDK, so you don't wire each one by hand.
  • Handles SKAN and conversion-value setup for iOS on your behalf.
  • Stitches deep links and re-engagement so a tap leads to the right screen.
  • Fights mobile ad fraud, filtering fake installs and click spam.

That last point alone pays for a lot of MMP subscriptions, because mobile fraud is real money.

When you actually need one

You need an MMP once you spend real budget acquiring app users across more than one network. The moment you're comparing Meta against Google against a DSP, you need a neutral party to dedupe them, and that's the trigger.

You can probably skip it if you're organic-only, running a tiny single-channel test, or a web-only product with no app at all. At that scale the referee has nothing to referee.

What it won't do

An MMP is not a growth strategy and not a substitute for incrementality testing. It tells you who to credit under the current rules; it won't tell you whether that spend was truly incremental, which is a separate and harder question.

An MMP is the neutral referee mobile advertising needs the moment more than one network starts claiming your installs. Buy one when you're spending across channels and need deduped, fraud-filtered, SKAN-ready numbers, and skip it while you're still too small to have an argument worth settling.
