If you grew up on web attribution, SKAdNetwork feels backwards on purpose. There are no user ids, no per-click rows, and results arrive late and rounded off. Here's what SKAN actually is, coming from the web.

What SKAdNetwork is

SKAdNetwork, or SKAN, is Apple's privacy-preserving framework for attributing iOS app installs to ad campaigns without identifying the user. Apple itself sits in the middle, validates that an install followed an ad, and sends back an aggregated, delayed report.

It exists because of App Tracking Transparency. Once most users declined the IDFA, the old device-level attribution the industry relied on simply stopped working, and SKAN became the fallback everyone actually uses.

Why it feels alien from the web

On the web you're used to seeing the individual journey: this click, this user, this conversion. SKAN deletes almost all of that on purpose.

  • No user-level data, so you get counts, not journeys.
  • A conversion value, a small number you define, standing in for what happened after install.
  • Deliberate delays and privacy thresholds, so fast, granular reporting is gone.
  • Attribution decided by Apple, not by your analytics or your MMP.

It's the opposite of the click-level web world, and fighting that instinct is most of the learning curve.

The conversion value is the whole game

Because SKAN won't tell you what a user did, you compress the important early signals, a purchase, a signup, a key action, into a single conversion value before the window closes. That number is the only post-install information you get back.

Designing that schema well is the real skill in mobile measurement, and it's where good teams pull ahead.

Where it's heading

Apple has a successor, AdAttributionKit, which adds re-engagement and alternative app marketplaces on the same privacy model. As of 2026 its adoption is still thin, and SKAN 4 is the framework that actually carries the traffic, so SKAN is what you build around today.

SKAdNetwork feels backwards to a web marketer because it is: aggregated, delayed, and user-free by design. Once you stop expecting web-style journeys and start designing a smart conversion value, SKAN stops feeling alien and starts being just another measurement tool with its own rules.
