ChatGPT makes a convincing data analyst for about five minutes, right up until you ask it something that depends on your data instead of the internet's.
What it does well
It explains a concept, drafts a query from a schema you describe, writes a regex, turns a pasted table into a summary, and unsticks you on syntax.
For the drafting and explaining half of the job, it's genuinely useful and fast, and it's a patient teacher when you're learning a new function. Paste a gnarly error and it'll usually spot the typo faster than you will.
Where ChatGPT as a data analyst falls apart
It has no live connection to your warehouse unless you build one. It has no memory of your metric definitions, and it makes confident guesses about columns it can't see.
Ask it for last quarter's MRR and it won't say "I can't reach your data." It will produce a number that looks plausible and is entirely made up. There's also a hard limit on how much data you can paste, so anything real gets truncated.
How to use it without getting burned
Feed it the schema and the definitions up front, so it's guessing less. Keep it to drafting and explaining, and verify every query against real data before anyone reads the result.
Never paste sensitive raw data into a public chat, because you don't control where it goes. Treat it as a sharp intern with no access, not an analyst with the keys.
The privacy line you don't cross
Beyond accuracy, there's exposure. Customer records, revenue detail, anything under a data agreement should never go into a public chat, because you can't guarantee where it's stored or who trains on it.
If the task genuinely needs sensitive data, it needs a tool with proper access and controls, not a copy pasted into a chat box.
ChatGPT is a convincing data analyst until the question needs your data, and then the gap shows. Use it for the drafting and the explaining, keep it away from the number that matters, and the five minutes turn into real leverage.
