For the past year I've been deep in iGaming — online casinos, plainly put. Web analytics, plus marketing and product analytics. It's going well, and there are cases to show. Sharing what I've learned about the economics of this niche.
How is iGaming different from a classic product? There, the user pays for value. Here, revenue is a statistical outcome of gambling activity. That's where all the complexity comes from.
Turnover ≠ revenue. The key metric is GGR = Bets Sum − Player Winnings, and from there you still subtract bonuses, taxes, provider commissions, affiliate/revshare, chargebacks, and fraud. The real economics is NGR and Contribution Profit — not a 30% bump in turnover.
Revenue is probabilistic. A feature can lift the number of bets while GGR in the test period actually drops, because of high RTP. You need control groups and a clean split between product uplift and gambling variance — not a quick post-period read.
A deposit ≠ income. It's a top-up of the player's balance, not a purchase: the player can lose it, win, withdraw the remainder, or never play at all.
Engagement is misleading. A rise in bets can be bonus wagering. A rise in retention can be bonus hunters. A rise in ARPU can be one VIP. Any product metric only means something alongside NGR, RTP, fraud, and responsible gambling indicators.
LTV is extremely unevenly distributed. Average ARPU is misleading — look at the median and cut it by segment.
A bonus is not a discount. It can lift FTD and cannibalize organic deposits at the same time, pull in bonus hunters, and create fraud. The real question isn't "how many activated it," but what incremental NGR it actually generated.
Payments and compliance are part of the unit economics: approval rate, chargebacks, KYC drop-off, and GGR tax decide whether the product is even profitable in a given GEO.
Short version: a classic product optimizes Traffic → Activation → Retention → Revenue.
iGaming runs Traffic → FTD → Bets → GGR → NGR → Contribution Profit — all while controlling variance, fraud, and VIP concentration at the same time.
