Why does “one dashboard” fail to align teams?
I’ve seen marketing, product, and finance stare at the same report — and walk away with different conclusions. Each convinced the data supports their view.
And technically, they’re all right.
Where alignment breaks down
The report lacks context. It doesn’t state:
• which question it answers
• which decision it supports
• which trade-offs matter
So each team reads it through its own goals.
What data doesn’t do by itself
Data doesn’t create alignment. Questions do. Without a shared question, numbers become ammunition instead of guidance.
What I insist on upfront
Before building a report, I define the management question and lock it in writing. One report supports one decision. Anything else creates confusion, not clarity.
