Real-time analytics is a luxury. That's what I thought. For a long time.
Checking the numbers every five minutes? Getting twitchy and killing a campaign before it's had a chance to ramp up?
I always felt that knee-jerk decisions did more harm than good.
Then I got on a call with a friend. He runs a subscription business and spends $300K–$500K on performance marketing. Per month. And he needs real-time analytics.
I asked him, "Do you really need real-time?"
"Of course," he said. And showed me the numbers.
He launches 20 new campaigns a day. About 70% of them won't work, so roughly 14. You can tell pretty quickly after launch. But if you don't catch them right away, those 14 campaigns burn through money at a crazy rate.
$500K a month is about $16K a day. That's roughly $1.5K an hour, if you count working hours.
Sure, you can wait a day, look at the data tomorrow, and draw some conclusions. Just be ready to pay for it.
That delay has a price, and it's not small. It's real money going up in smoke.
Most tools don't offer real-time. Sometimes it's technically hard: ad platform data comes in with a lag and has to be stitched together. And sometimes it's the same belief I used to have: "Come on, you're not going to check the data every hour anyway."
But the pain is real. And it's expensive.
So I started looking at real-time differently. A couple of metrics that update live. A clear threshold. Cost per subscription goes above normal, and you get an alert. Right after that, an automated rule kicks in or it gets escalated to a person.
Bottom line: if you need real-time analytics, you have every right to it. And if you're struggling to set it up, reach out and we'll figure it out together.
