AI will replace analysts. Being good at SQL won't save you.

If your main value is "I can pull the data," you're already competing with a tool your company pays $20 a month for. For years, technical knowledge gave marketing analysts an advantage.

You knew the tables, the joins, why Meta and Stripe never agreed, and which spreadsheet named final_final_v7 was running the business. That knowledge still matters. But the price of producing a query is collapsing. I work as a fractional Head of Marketing Analytics, and I see this every week.

A marketer asks Claude or ChatGPT a question and gets SQL, a chart, and a confident explanation before the meeting starts. Here's the uncomfortable part: your company may decide that's good enough before you figure out how to prove otherwise. And "good enough" can still be expensive.

"Show me CAC by channel" takes seconds. "Which channel looks expensive because our attribution is broken?" requires someone who understands the business. Revenue sounds straightforward until Finance means recognized revenue, Marketing means paid orders, and the dashboard includes refunds. When Meta, Google, GA4, and Stripe disagree, a polished answer can hide a budget mistake. Someone has to say: "I wouldn't move $50,000 based on this number." And explain what needs checking before anyone does.

The same goes for falling ROAS. Cutting spend, waiting three days, checking cohort mix, and auditing purchase events are all possible responses. Choosing one means understanding the consequences and taking responsibility.

AI can help with every step. Your value depends on how well you direct that work and defend the decision. If you spend most of your week fulfilling data requests, start moving closer to the decisions those requests support.

Learn how the business makes money. Challenge metric definitions. Bring a recommendation to the meeting. Do it before someone asks why they still need your role.

When AI can produce the report, what will your company still need you to decide?
