Performance Max reporting looks clean and calm, and that's exactly the problem. It looks that way because it leaves out almost everything you'd use to question it.
Channel results, but not channel cost
A PMax campaign runs across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, and more. Google's Channel Performance report, added in 2025, finally shows conversions and impressions by channel, but it still doesn't break out cost, so you can see where results came from and not how much budget each channel ate.
So you can see that conversions came from Search or from Display, but not what each one cost you, which is the number you'd most want before scaling.
Brand and non-brand are blended
PMax will happily spend on people already searching your brand and report those conversions alongside genuinely new demand. Blended together, they make the campaign look more efficient than it is.
Strip out brand traffic and the real prospecting performance often looks very different.
The reports it does give are thin
What you get tends to hide the detail you need:
- Search terms grouped into vague categories, not the actual queries.
- Asset performance rated as low, good, or best, without the numbers behind it.
- Placements you can see only partially, and historically couldn't fully exclude.
- Conversions attributed by a model you can't inspect or adjust.
Why the opacity is a budget problem
Missing detail isn't just annoying, it changes decisions. When brand and prospecting blur together, you scale a number that's propped up by cheap brand conversions. When channels are hidden, you can't cut the surface that's wasting money.
The clean report gives you confidence without giving you control, which is the worst combination for a budget.
What to do about it
Rebuild the visibility Google removed. Pull the data into BigQuery for history, use scripts and the search category insights to see more, apply brand exclusions so prospecting stands alone, and reconcile PMax conversions against your own analytics.
None of it makes PMax fully transparent, but it turns a calm, empty report into something you can actually challenge.
Performance Max reporting hides more than it reveals by design, and the calm surface is the tell. Rebuild the breakdowns yourself, and you trade false confidence for the control the interface quietly took away.
