If GA4 annoys you and you want something more privacy-first, three names come up every time: Matomo, Piwik PRO, and Plausible. They get lumped together as "the privacy alternatives," but they're built for very different teams.
Here's how they actually differ, and which one fits which situation.
What "privacy-first alternative" even means
The pitch is some mix of four things: you own the data, it can be hosted in the EU, it can run with fewer or no cookies, and it spares you some consent-banner pain. How much of each you get varies a lot between these tools.
Side by side
| Tool | Hosting | Cookies / consent | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matomo | Self-hosted or cloud | Cookie-based by default; cookieless option exists | Free self-hosted; paid cloud |
| Piwik PRO | Cloud (enterprise) | Cookie-based; consent manager built in | Free plan ended; paid from about EUR 35/mo |
| Plausible | Cloud or self-hosted | Cookieless; no banner needed for basic metrics | From about EUR 9/mo |
Matomo: ownership and depth
Matomo is the closest to a full GA-style tool you can self-host. Run it on your own server and you control the data, the location, and the retention completely.
The catch is that its default tracking uses cookies, so it's still exposed to ad blockers and usually still wants a consent banner. You get depth and ownership, not automatic simplicity.
Piwik PRO: enterprise and compliance
Piwik PRO targets regulated industries, bundling a consent manager and a customer data platform alongside analytics. It's the option for teams that need enterprise support and strict compliance.
Note the pricing shift: the free plan was discontinued, and paid plans now start around EUR 35 a month, so it's no longer the free on-ramp it once was.
Plausible: simple and cookieless
Plausible is the lightweight, cookieless option. Its script is tiny, it needs no consent banner for basic traffic metrics under most GDPR readings, and it's open source and EU-hosted.
The trade-off is depth: it gives you clean, essential metrics, not GA4's sprawling event and ecommerce analysis. Fathom sits in the same simple, cookieless niche if you want another option.
Which to choose
- Matomo if you want maximum ownership and GA-like depth and can run a server.
- Piwik PRO if you're an enterprise in a regulated industry and need built-in consent and support.
- Plausible or Fathom if you want privacy by default and simple metrics with no banner.
The honest catch
None of these is a drop-in GA4 replacement for deep ecommerce work. You give up GA4's free BigQuery export and its depth in exchange for ownership, simplicity, or compliance, and that trade only makes sense if those are what you actually need. For a content site or SaaS that mostly wants clean traffic trends, it's an easy call; for a store that lives in GA4 BigQuery, it rarely is.
Matomo, Piwik PRO, and Plausible solve three different problems that happen to share a privacy label. Pick for what you value most, ownership, compliance, or simplicity, and remember you're trading GA4's depth for it, not getting it for free.
