Sorry.

Not because SQL is dead.

Because “I can pull the data” just stopped being a strong professional identity.

For a long time, being able to pull the data was a real moat in marketing analytics. You knew where the tables lived. You knew the joins. You knew which GA4 export was lying, why Meta and Stripe never agreed, and which spreadsheet named final_final_v7 was somehow still running the business.

That skill mattered.

It still matters.

But it is no longer enough.

I work as a fractional Head of Marketing Analytics, and I see this shift every week. The first query is getting cheaper. Sometimes it is basically free. A marketer can ask Claude or ChatGPT for SQL and get something that looks useful before the meeting even starts.

The scary part is that it often looks good enough.

Clean query.

Nice chart.

Confident explanation.

Maybe even a dashboard by lunch.

And still, the whole thing can be wrong in exactly the way that costs money.

Because the real work was never just writing SQL.

The real work is knowing what question is worth asking.

“Show me CAC by channel” is easy.

“Which channel looks expensive because our attribution is broken?” is where the money is.

The real work is knowing what the metric actually means.

AI can calculate revenue. It does not know whether your company means gross revenue, net revenue, paid revenue, recognized revenue, first-order revenue, or the weird definition your CFO introduced three months ago.

The real work is knowing when the data is not safe.

If Meta, Google, GA4 and Stripe all disagree, the model will not magically create truth. It will pick something, format it nicely, and sound confident.

Someone still has to say:

“I would not make a budget decision on this number.”

That is the job.

A model can tell you ROAS dropped.

It cannot decide whether to cut spend, wait three days, check cohort mix, audit purchase events, or call the media buyer.

That is judgment.

And judgment is becoming more valuable, not less.

So yes, AI can write SQL in 5 seconds.

Bad news if your value was writing SQL slowly.

Good news if your value is knowing when the answer is wrong.

If AI can write the SQL, what exactly are analysts still paid for?
